Oh So Clever! Artisan Find

Yesterday, I ran across this artisan crafter who's medium is something most of us might consider compost filler. That sounds so harsh after looking at what he can do with eggshells! Eggstreme, the name of his Etsy shop based in Huntsville, is full of cut, pierced, adorned and painted eggs of all kinds. He has been decorating eggs for over 6 years using ostrich, emu, rhea, goose and duck eggs. Take a look at this sampling of his work. I guess the term "decorating" is hardly accurate, in that some of my favorite pieces are not just pierced in delicate tracery patterns, but indeed the surface of the egg has been carved in shallow relief.

Summer Solstice Filigree Carved Goose Egg

Reminiscent of the window arches I saw at Cambridge, England, the lacy pierced patterns on the Summer Solstice Goose Egg are as interesting in the void spaces as in the clean white shell.

Rose Trellis Intricately Hand Carved Ostrich Egg

Rose Trellis is my favorite in his collection. I simply wonder at his ability to carve into the surface of the shell without producing nothing but a pile of shards!

Dazzling Pansies N' Pearls Faberge Style Jeweled Egg

For those who appreciate a more ornate offering, but still incorporating that intricate piercing.

Exuberant Forest Flowers Faberge Style Decorated Egg

This example displays the detail he uses to finish the interior of those that are designed as precious containers.

There are many other styles and treatments of eggshells in the Eggstreme Etsy shop. I challenge you not to be as mesmerized as I was with this artist's creativity and perfection of detail.
